trashboats2011Exploring how weight and design affect speed, distance, and seaworthiness, Jemicy’s Lower School JE math students raced their handcrafted “clean trash” boats!

This project combined recycling with a creative and multisensory learning experience and culminated with a fun and spirited competition.

The students began by sketching their boats and dividing up trash that had been collected for use as construction materials. Each student made an individual boat, and additionally, assisted with the creation of a class boat.

On race day, teachers dressed with trash! Students cheered on their creations (powered by the wind force of a hairdryer) and discovered which boat was the fastest and which held the most weight.
